Daniel Nicolas (Amsterdam, 1962) is a Dutch/American photographer based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After several years of working as a designer he decided to pursue a career in photography. Starting as a photo journalist for a music newspaper, he moved on to working for several major publications and organizations. His work has been published worldwide in a wide array of books and magazines, he has exhibited regularly and one of his photos was used on a Dutch stamp.
In recent years he changed his focus to personal long term projects. His goal is to dig deep in to a community or subject, focusing on social and environmental issues. “I like to immerse myself in to a project as much as I can. If I could, I would become part of the community or subject I am photographing. There is beauty and pride in any community or human being and I want to show that.”
One of these projects is ISLAND, about the final years of the Havenstraatterrein, one of the last fringe areas within the city of Amsterdam. Within the first year of publication of the book he has had three exhibitions, two of which were solo, the project has been featured in PS, the weekend magazine of newspaper het Parool, and it has been added to the collections of the Stedelijk Museum, Rijksmuseum, Huis Marseille and the City Archive, in Amsterdam.
Daniel works and has worked for magazines and companies like:
Frame, Domus, Icon, Crafts, Mark, Blauwe Kamer, Kracht, Elle Wonen, De Architect.
Prix de Rome, Converse, Storeage, Droog Design, MOOI Noord-Holland, Brand van Egmond, PostNL, PIANOo, Talens, Liganova, vdBJ, Albert Heijn, Forum voor Stedelijke Vernieuwing, Stad-Forum Amsterdam, Vincent Award, Rigo, Uitmarkt Amsterdam, KWF, Deltametropool
